I had some interesting conversations with our media specialist about Title 1 money. We are not a Title 1 school and we have a major deficit in technology here. Our MS has worked in Title 1 schools and visited several in our area and they have so much more technology than we do. Another interesting thing... I spoke to a student in the media center about Anime. Several students are very interested in Anime or the books which are called Monga. There is now a Anime/Monga club and the center can hardly keep enough books stocked. The MS said she is so happy they are interested in any type of reading and she will make sure we receive more of these books. Our students are hugely into video games as well. One game that was mentioned is called Spore and it is a science video game that was made by the same folks that made Sim games. Students would love to play learning games in class.
Things I've observed lately
The media center seems to be a place where kids feel very welcome and comfortable, however maybe a little too comfortable. There are students sitting behind the media desk not working or peer facilitating but just reading. There is a lot of talking and I have found it difficult o sometimes concentrate on work that I am doing. I think it is because it is the end of the year and things tend to become a bit more rowdy. I also suspect that since we have hired a new clerk the students feel comfortable with her and tend to want to "play" a little more than they should in the MS. Unless the students are peer facilitators which are used to help in the counseling office, front office and media center then they should remain on the other side of the desk when in the media center.
Top Books Being Checked out this school year:
Divergent Series
John Green young adult books
"13 Reasons Why"
